It is around 11 p.m., and word has it that another Kenyan school is on fire! Fortunately, rescue teams are on the ground helping to remedy the situation.
On the morning of Thursday, 28th May 2026, Kenyans woke up to the terrible news of deaths and injuries. A school in Nakuru County was facing a fire. One of their dormitories had caught fire at around 1 a.m. and caused deaths and injuries.
By midday, 16 students from Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, had been confirmed dead, and more were still in hospital.
Evening Fire
Now, it is said there is an ongoing fire at Gacarage Girls Secondary School in Ruchu, Kandara Constituency, Murang’a County. Apparently, there are people around on a rescue mission, and trying to put out the fire.
Kenyans who have gotten wind of the situation are praying that there will be no serious injuries or fatalities.
Word from the Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata
It is impressive how fast the Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has moved to quell people’s fears. Boarding schools in Kenya normally admit students from far and near, and hearing of a fire outbreak can cause parents serious anxiety.
Governor Kang’ata has given an update on Facebook within minutes. He has informed the public that his office is aware of the Gacarage fire outbreak. He has also explained that emergency crews are on the scene doing what needs to be done.
Of critical importance is the assurance the Governor has given, underlining that all the students are fine. He said that every student has been accounted for.
He then asked members of the local community to give the rescue teams, the police, and county officers room to help out. He also requested everyone to resist the temptation to spread rumours.
Meanwhile, the Governor has said that the County Disaster Management team would respond to any queries anyone might have, through the “Mymuranga” app.
While relevant Kenyan authorities are doing everything possible to keep things under control, it is unfortunate that such incidents are happening to students.
This is especially true because the older generation looks to the young to make the country a better place. As it were, many countries of the world are becoming increasingly intolerant of foreigners. Hence, people are better off when they can live in their own country with minimal anxiety.
