America is not a place to envy today. It is not a place one should consider going to improve their life.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently told students that America is not the place to be at this time. The Chancellor told students at a Catholic convention on Friday, May 15, that he would not advise his children to choose the USA as their place of residence.

He added that he would not even wish them to go and study there during this period.

Why is Merz not impressed with today’s USA?

One reason the German Chancellor gave for having a negative view of today’s America was the changing social atmosphere. According to Merz, the US is no longer a friendly environment.

The other reason was that it is becoming increasingly difficult for educated people, including those who are highly educated, to secure jobs in the US.

Merz’s View of the Iran War

Some weeks ago, the German Chancellor commented on how much Iran had humiliated the US in the ongoing war.

Trump was so annoyed with him for his remarks that he retaliated. He sought to hurt German trade.

A few days after Merz’s remarks, he imposed heavy taxes on imported European vehicles. It was obvious that Germany would be adversely affected, given that it is a major motor vehicle manufacturer.

Germany manufactures world-renowned car models, including Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.

The German Chancellor’s attitude may represent that of many European leaders. Many seem to be distancing themselves from Trump’s actions and public utterances.

For instance, when he sought military assistance from these countries in early March, they declined. They noted it was a war whose purpose they did not understand.

The War with Iran

The US and Israel initiated the war against Iran on February 28, 2026. The two allies bombarded the Arab country with ballistic missiles and killed several leaders in the early days of the war.

However, with the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader at the time, Iran became more vicious. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard launched short and long-range missiles targeting US and Israeli assets.

In the process, they killed many US soldiers and destroyed several valuable US assets. These included warplanes and military bases in Gulf countries such as the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

At the moment, nobody can tell how the war scenario is likely to develop. Donald Trump still considers this period a ceasefire. Yet it is difficult to tell what the ceasefire is truly dependent on.

Recently, Saudi Arabia, one of America’s strong allies, differed with Donald Trump’s plan to beef up military personnel near Iran. That made the US President halt his plan, which he had dubbed “Project Freedom Out”.

Meanwhile, Iran defiantly says it will proceed to upgrade its nuclear capability. It does not care if that will mean facing off with the US in another round.
