It is the first time Donald Trump has attended a White House Correspondents’ Dinner while in office, and there has been a shooting!

The 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD), which mentalist Oz Pearlman was hosting, was marred by a shooting incident. The venue of the dinner was the Washington Hilton.

What Exactly Happened?

The function, which is held annually, celebrates the First Amendment. During this function, the host, usually a comedian, makes fun of anyone they choose. This is inclusive of the president.

This year, the WHCD was set to be held on the evening of Saturday, 25 April.

Just when the attendees had settled down, a young man, now known to be 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, fired a shotgun outside the dinner venue.

He directed his shots at a Secret Service agent stationed outside the hotel ballroom and dashed past him. This was at a designated checkpoint.

Fortunately, other officers reacted fast and gave chase, subduing the man in no time.

Just Before the Shooting Chaos

By 20:00 hours, the hotel ballroom, where the event was to take place, was filled with guests. President Trump and his wife, Melania, then entered 16 minutes later and took their seats at the front as expected.

Then at 20:34 hours, the host, mentalist Pearlman, approached the President and they conferred for a brief moment.

But in the course of the conversation, gunshots could be heard outside. However, they were not clear enough to ruffle those inside the ballroom.

Impressively, it only took 11 seconds for security agents to surround the President. Soon, another set of agents pulled away Vice President J.D. Vance.

Meanwhile, more security service agents surrounded the President. They all then escorted him off the stage, where he had been seated.

Other cabinet members were escorted through the hotel lobby to safety. Leading the pack were War Secretary Pete Hegseth, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin.

Meanwhile, guests sheltered next to their respective tables, in obvious shock. Apparently, the shooter had been stopped on the floor just above the ballroom.

A short while later, things seemed to have settled. The subdued shooter could be seen lying prostrate outside the hotel, his hands behind him in handcuffs.

Around an hour later, President Trump’s motorcade left the hotel compound. He then held a Press Conference on reaching the White House.

Regarding the shooting, Trump remarked that being President is a dangerous job. He then added that being a shooting target comes with the territory.

Preliminary Findings

The FBI began investigations soon after the dangerous incident. They already have some crucial information, as some officers traveled to the shooter’s neighborhood immediately and questioned people around.

Meanwhile, the US Secret Service spokesperson, Anthony Guglielmi, said that the agent who was shot is already out of the hospital.

Elsewhere, US President Donald Trump explained that the reason the Secret Service agent survived was his bulletproof jacket.

Scary as the whole ballroom incident was, there was a funny moment, as mentalist Pearlman later explained. He said that his eyes met those of the US President, albeit for two seconds, as both of them crouched beside the president’s table. Pearlman had ducked instinctively, while the President went down from an urgent security push.

Trump has since used the incident to highlight the importance of the ballroom he is constructing at the White House. He says that the White House ballroom will be totally secure.

He then said that the woman who has sued about the White House ballroom should withdraw the case.

Recently, there was an exchange of fire in a Louisiana mall, but it was different from the WHCD fire exchange. In Louisiana, it seemed as if two groups of people had fallen out.

However, with the Saturday shooting, it appears as if the target was the President and his staff.
