Africans are known to mark their presence once they become residents in developed nations. This time round, for example, the UK will benefit from the services of a mayor of Somali origin.
Yassin Mohamud is now the Mayor of Bristol, a UK county with a population of around 500,000. Although he has taken the oath today, Mohamud was announced as the next mayor on 7th April 2026.
In Bristol, residents do not vote for the mayor directly. They stopped that form of election in 2022. In a referendum held that year, the residents opted for elected councillors to choose the mayor from among themselves.
Before becoming Bristol’s Lord Mayor, Yassin Mohamud served as a councillor. He is a member of the Green Party and is taking up the Mayoral role from Henry Michallat, a member of the Conservative Party.
Mohamud’s story is one of impressive success, considering he entered the UK as a refugee. He has been the councillor for Bristol’s Lawrence Hill ward since 2021.
According to him, he believes in listening to the people, serving them, and working with them so that every person has a chance to succeed.
Other African UK Mayors
The UK has previously benefitted from the services of leaders of African origin, especially at the council level. In 2014, Elizabeth Kang’ethe made history as the UK’s first elected mayor of Kenyan descent.
She represented the Barking and Dagenham Borough. Earlier, in 2010, she had been elected a councilor.
Since then, other Kenyans have been elected to UK councils. They include Joseah Kimani Njore of Buckinghamshire; Lilian Seenoi of Northern Ireland; Sally Kimondo of Dunstable; and Kwame Otiende of Hackney.
It helps the country a lot when local governance is good. It leaves the national government to handle issues of national security, foreign relations, and trade, and such other matters of national interest.
For now, the Somali Mayor of Bristol, Yassin Mohamud, continues to receive congratulatory messages from fellow foreign residents of the UK. He has promised to continue helping other people in the same way he was helped when he was new to Bristol.
