Tuesday High School Shooting (Courtesy of CBC)

An 18-year-old teenager in Turkey went to his old high school carrying a gun and opened fire in two classrooms. By the time he was cornered, he had injured 16 people. However, he was not available for interrogation as he shot himself dead.

Among the injured were a police officer, 10 students, a worker at the school cafeteria, and 4 teachers.

It is reported that the teenager had fired his first shots as soon as he had entered the school compound. The area Governor, Hasan Şildak, said the shooter had fired indiscriminately.

The unfortunate incident took place at Ahmet Koyuncu Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School, within Turkey’s Siverek district. The school is in the south-eastern part of the country.

The Motive of the Shooting

The motive of the shooting is not yet known. However, the school’s ex-student had hinted on social media that there would soon be a shooting, posting the warning in the school’s accounts.

Apart from the Tuesday shooting and another one that took place the following day in a middle school, Turkey is not known for such incidents. Gun laws are already strict in Turkey, and the public is now calling for tighter security in schools.
