UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is a man under siege. Matters to do with America’s notorious child trafficker, Jeffrey Epstein, are threatening to bring him down. Yet, he may not even have known the late sex offender.

The Lord Mandelson’s Appointment Scandal

Lord Mandelson, whom Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed ambassador to the US in February 2025, has been linked to Jeffrey Epstein. The suspicion that Mandelson might have leaked sensitive government information to Epstein during his tenure in office led to his resignation in September 2025.

However, while Mandelson’s resignation seemed to have calmed down political temperatures, fresh complaints among parliamentarians have erupted this year. This follows Mandelson’s arrest by UK Police early this year for questioning.

The police wanted to interrogate the 72-year-old concerning documents newly released from the infamous Epstein files.

The US Justice Department has been releasing the declassified Epstein files in batches since early 2025. Pam Bondi, the former US Attorney General, has been overseeing the process until the US President recently relieved her of her duties.

Why the UK Prime Minister is Criticized

It is said that the Prime Minister’s office announced Keir Starmer’s interest in appointing Lord Mandelson as an ambassador before the vetting process took place.

Many people feel that declaring the Prime Minister’s preferred candidate put parliamentarians, especially from the Labour Party, in an awkward position. Ultimately, the vetting committee did not declare outright that Mandelson had failed the vetting process. Instead, the panel recommended that a security check be carried out on Mandelson.

As far as calls for Starmer to resign go, they are not confined to the opposition. Members of Parliament (MPs) calling for Starmer’s resignation include backbenchers from the Labour party, Starmer’s own party. Critics contend that the Prime Minister showed poor judgement in appointing Lord Mandelson ambassador to the US.

There is also fear that Starmer’s deteriorating image may adversely affect the Labour Party branches in Scotland and Wales in the upcoming May elections. Even one member of the Scottish Labour Party (SLP), Anas Sarwar, recently tried to distance himself from the Prime Minister.
