The US has deployed the world’s biggest aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Middle East war zone. Is this a sign that the Iran-centered war is likely to escalate?

The vessel left for Croatia in mid-March, with a stopover in Greece, on a trip intended to facilitate repairs. The vessel’s laundry room had earlier caught fire on March 12, 2026, resulting in injuries and damage to the ship’s interior. However, its operational capacity was not affected.

Where was Gerald R. Ford stationed before?

Incidentally, the world’s biggest carrier was still in the Middle East when it caught fire. It was deployed to the Red Sea for the first time, purposely to support the Iran War mission: Operation Epic Fury. The ship arrived at the sea on March 7, 2027, just a week after the start of the war.

By that time, US President Donald Trump was already declaring victory, based on the killings of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khameini, and his close associates. Yet the war continued and still continues, save for a two-week-long ceasefire that began on April 7.

Is the War Escalating or Ending?

With the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu having agreed to a ceasefire he was not prepared for, one might have thought the war with Iran was about to end. However, the actions on the ground seem to communicate otherwise.

The US is beefing up its warships. The USS Gerald R. Ford will not be the only active carrier in the waters around the Middle East. While its designation is the Mediterranean Sea, another aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, is in the Arabian Sea.

Amazingly, the US has also dispatched USS George H. W. Bush to join them, using the route around the African continent. This recent deployment leaves the world wondering if President Trump knows the end of the war is nowhere in sight.

He would probably feel dissatisfied about abandoning the war while Iran still looks strong militarily and psychologically. Hence, he might seek a reason to hit Iran even harder. These uncertainties are bound to keep everyone on edge.

It is probably the reason Russia and China are closely monitoring the activities inside and around Iran. It is also probably the reason each of them seems to be preparing for the eventuality of an escalated Gulf war.
