A United Airlines aircraft yesterday hit a streetlight and a trailer while landing. No one was seriously injured.

Yesterday, a Boeing 767 trying to land at the Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, seemed to have gone too close to the nearby road. The aircraft, which belongs to United Airlines, was moving at 160 miles per hour to land at the airport’s Runway 29.

However, its landing tires hit a truck on the road 400 ft away from the edge of the runway. A motorist, Patrick Oyulu, explained to CNN that he had witnessed the plane fly low in front of a moving truck. Oyulu also described seeing the truck driver try to maneuver away before smoke and debris filled the air.

The Lucky Driver

Fortunately, Warren Boardley, the affected truck driver, escaped with only minor injuries. Chuck Paterakis, a senior official at Boardley’s employer company, confirmed that to CNN.

He also explained that Boardley was on his way to deliver bread to a depot at the Newark Airport when the accident happened. According to Paterakis, Boardley had suffered cuts from broken glass, but he was expected to be discharged from the hospital by evening.

Apparently, Runway 29, where the United Airlines aircraft was directed to land, is often not used. Surprisingly, it appears the traffic controllers hardly noticed the mishap on the road. Hence, they continued directing aircraft as normal.

In March, an Air Canada aircraft hit a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. Unfortunately, the two youthful aircraft pilots died, and 40 passengers were injured.

United Airlines has promised to investigate the incident. Apparently, none of Boeing’s 200 passengers on board, or its crew of 10, was injured in the accident.
