Release the humanitarian aid workers!

Allow food deliveries to people who are starving. Allow medical deliveries for people left without medical facilities. That is Italy’s clarion call to Israel.

Israel has today seized not fewer than 22 boats delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The naval forces intercepted the boats, which are part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, in the Mediterranean Sea.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a non-political movement of ordinary people, comprising doctors, seafarers, humanitarian aid workers, and others. The movement seeks to reinstate human dignity worldwide wherever it is lacking.

The Misery in Gaza

The Gaza region, a densely populated strip that borders Israel, has not always been squalid. The Gaza Strip was once a thriving economy, a great hub for trade and scholarship.

However, things turned for the worse when it was caught up in conflicts between Israel and the Hamas group of Palestine.

Whereas conflicts start and end, and life continues, the latest apparent retaliation on Hamas by the Netanyahu regime has been extreme. In fact, a commission enlisted by the United Nations to investigate the Gaza situation last year found Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu guilty of genocide.

Within two years since the latest conflict began in 2023, Israeli forces have killed 67,000 Palestinians. Among the dead are 20,000 or more children. Meanwhile, almost 170,000 have been injured.

The Israel Defense Forces have not spared hospitals either. They have destroyed 125 medical facilities and killed over 1,700 health workers and assisting aid workers.

These are possibly some of the ugly realities Trump’s senior officers have considered before deciding to tender their resignations.

No Respect for Human Life and International Conventions

Like his US counterpart, President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to have no respect for international conventions.

There is a Geneva Convention that singles out hospitals as protected facilities even during conflicts; institutions that no one should target for destruction.

Yet Netanyahu proceeded to strike hospitals amidst international complaints. And now, his forces have captured boats delivering humanitarian assistance to the region.

Hopefully, the governments of Australia, Germany, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Argentina, Italy, the United States, Spain, Bahrain, France, Uruguay, Italy, Turkey, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Ireland, Oman, New Zealand, and well-wishers will put pressure on Israel to release the crew of the captured boats.
