Calls for the release of President Connolly’s sister from detention are echoing across Ireland.

Israel has detained Dr. Margaret Connolly, a sister of the Irish Prime Minister, Catherine Connolly. Margaret was in a group of well-wishers delivering humanitarian aid to the devastated Gaza Strip.

Her boat was one of 10 captured by Israeli forces in the high seas on Monday, 18th, 2026.

Calls for Israel to release Humanitarian Workers

The Irish Prime Minister, Michael Martin, has called for the immediate release of Dr. Margaret Connolly. He also demands that Israel release all the other Irish people it has detained in recent months.

The Irish Prime Minister noted that it was wrong for Israel to interfere with the people delivering help to those who needed it. Expressing his sympathy to the President’s family and the families of other Irish detainees, PM Martin said he would escalate the issue to the level of the European Union.

The Humanitarian Aid Group

Dr. Margaret Connolly was part of the Flotilla Group that had been delivering basic supplies to Gaza. Flotilla aid workers normally have no political affiliation.

Dr. Margaret’s convoy of boats is not the first Flotilla convoy to be captured by Israel. Last month, Israel captured a convoy of 20 Flotilla boats. The convoy, which had people of different nationalities, was also delivering aid to Gaza.

Although many of those in that convoy have apparently been released since, two were held back for further interrogation.

Meanwhile, other Irish leaders have joined the Prime Minister in sending their sympathies to President Connolly. Among them is Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Simon Harris.

President Connolly’s visit to England is set to last three days. Although very proud of her sister, she says she is still worried about her. And there is obvious anxiety in Ireland about her detention.

As long as the Israelis continue to detain Dr. Margaret and the other aid workers, people are bound to be anxious. It is the same way people across the world recently became anxious after the kidnapping of a journalist in Iraq.
