At last, someone is speaking louder against Israel’s violations in the West Bank. Europe’s strongest economies warn Israel.
The UK, Germany, France, and Italy have demanded that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government stop hostile activity in the West Bank. They have demanded that Israeli settlers stop further construction in the West Bank.
They also want Israeli soldiers to stop intimidating and harassing Palestinians who reside in the region. Since 2023, human rights institutions have reported unwarranted arrests of Palestinians by Israeli soldiers. UN monitors have made the same observations, in addition to displacements by Israeli settlers.
Israel has always used the excuse of suppressing the Hamas militants when fighting Palestinians in Gaza. Hamas is not a threat in the West Bank, yet Palestinians in the region have died in their thousands at the hands of Israelis.
What the UK, Germany, France, and Italy Want
The four strong European countries have decided to spearhead the denunciation of Israel’s violations. Apparently, they have realized the Israeli atrocities have remained understated for years.
In addition to displacing and killing thousands of Palestinians in the West Bank and multiple times more in Gaza, Israel has been barring the entry of humanitarian aid to those areas. For example, Israeli forces have repeatedly captured the Flotilla supporters’ boats in international waters.
Now the four powerful European countries have:
- Condemned the violent actions of Israeli soldiers against Palestinian residents
- Demanded that the Israeli government investigate misbehavior by its soldiers
- Condemned the violent actions by Israeli settlers
- Demanded that the Israeli settlers stop constructing any more settlements in the West Bank
- Warned construction companies against bidding for building tenders, as long as the work involves construction in the West Bank.
Apparently, the European countries have come to terms with some sad reality. It is that international bodies that used to protect the weak have, of late, been rendered ineffective.
In their joint statement, the UK, Germany, France, and Italy decried Israel’s plan to erect buildings in the EI corridor. This corridor is in Jerusalem’s east and extends to the West Bank.
These European countries underscored the negative effects of building in that corridor and the illegality of such construction. They indicated that erecting constructions in the area would split the place into two territories.
