On Monday, the UK Metropolitan Police arrested Lord Mandelson, 72, but later released him on bail. Mandelson, who was in North London at the time of his arrest, is a former envoy to the US.
Why Mandelson was Relieved of his Diplomatic Role
Until September 2025, Peter Mandelson was the UK ambassador to the US. He was relieved of his diplomatic duties because, apparently, he had communicated with Jeffrey Epstein, the infamous US sex trafficker, even after the latter had been convicted of the offenses.
Why Mandelson was Arrested this Week
It is said that Mandelson was arrested this week because the newly released Epstein files contain new information linking him to Jeffrey Epstein. The Epstein files contain a bulk of information that shows many of Epstein’s activities and the individuals he associated with.
Apparently, the newest set of files shows that Mandelson passed on sensitive information to the late sex offender, which is tantamount to a breach of diplomatic protocols.
Late last week, the former Duke of York, Andrew Mountbatten, was also arrested because of his links with Epstein. The Thames Valley police, the biggest of all non-metropolitan police forces of England and Wales, interrogated him for many hours before releasing him. He, too, is suspected of having passed on to Epstein sensitive information.
