Heavy rains have caused extensive flooding on roads, making driving and walking impossible. The rain began falling in torrents yesterday night and continued into today.
Fortunately, rescue teams have been on hand to salvage this situation in Chongqing, China.
According to China’s state media, different agencies are busy rescuing people from the floods. 3 deaths have been reported in Chongqing, while at least 17 people have been reported missing.
Several parts of China have witnessed extremely heavy downpour this week, with the city of Guangxi being among the most affected by Thursday’s rain.
Rain Caused by the Monsoons
The heavy rains that have affected vast regions of China are a result of heavy monsoon winds. Up to 22 deaths have been reported across China. Meanwhile, around 24,000 residents have been evacuated from flooded areas.
China has already set aside funds to help manage such disasters, amounting to about $2.94 million, roughly 20 million yuan.
Changing Weather Patterns and Urban Dwellings
Weather patterns have changed immensely in recent years. Hence, many countries are now caught unawares by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. In many cities and towns, strained infrastructure only makes things worse.
In Kenya, for example, unexpected heavy rain that fell in Nairobi at the end of April left one of the country’s slums heavily flooded. 500 households in Mukuru-kwa-Njenga were severely affected.
