Yesterday, King Charles of the United Kingdom sent a message of congratulations to NATO, as the organization marks 75 years since its formation.

NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an alliance between the US, UK, and most European countries. NATO was formed to ensure that peace prevails in the region, and, where possible, to pre-empt any threats to peace.

If any member country faces military aggression, NATO takes up the matter, and its members vote on how to proceed in solving the problem.

NATO is Deeply involved in the Ukraine Crisis

It is significant that King Charles has officially congratulated NATO, considering that conventionally the monarch does not comment on politics. While expressing gratitude to NATO is not outright politics, it is notable that the organization is currently trying to solve a military-cum-political crisis.

NATO is deeply involved in attempts to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, which started when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Therefore, the King’s congratulatory message can be seen as a way of encouraging NATO to continue carrying out its peace-keeping mandate.

Charles Letter was Addressed to NATO Secretary General

King Charles’ congratulatory message was contained in a letter addressed to NATO’s current secretary general, whose tenure began in 2014.

The secretary general, who is Norwegian, is called Jens Stoltenberg, and he has had a successful political career. He served two terms as his country’s Prime Minister: 2000 – 2001 and 2005 – 2013, and has always supported the Euro-American cooperation.

In the midst of the Russia-Ukrainian crisis, the NATO membership has extended Stoltenberg’s term to October 2024. They find him steady, patient, and great at building consensus.

Meanwhile, the entire world must take notice that King Charles has hailed NATO for decisively supporting Ukraine, and taken the opportunity to welcome Sweden and Finland to NATO.

The two Scandinavian countries are NATO’s newest members. Sweden brought NATO membership to 32 when it gained full NATO membership on March 7th 2024
