A UK Member of Parliament has called out a people smuggling Iraqi living in his neighbourhood.
The MP for South Leicestershire said this week that Twana Jamal, convicted in France for trafficking people lives in Leicestershire. The MP learnt about Jamal from a BBC investigation documentary, tracing Jamal’s whereabouts and attempts to seek UK asylum.
According to the BBC, Jamal, an Iraqi Kurd, was at one time very good at smuggling people across borders. Consequently, it is said, the underground world referred to him as “the godfather”.
When the French authorities caught up with him, he was 36 years old, and was said to have been earning around £100,000 weekly.
Where People Smuggling Jamal Lives
According to the BBC investigators, Twana Jamal resides in Leicestershire’s Blaby village. Following the revelation, Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa, condemned the presence of Jamal near the constituency office. He said Jamal should not be anywhere in Leicestershire or the UK.
Jamal is said to be running two shops near the constituency office, and Costa calls it unacceptable. Though Jamal denied owning or running the identified shops, BBC had identified him working at one of the mini-marts.
Another Leicestershire politician, Paul Hartshorn, said that very many people had reached out to him. He said they were concerned about the said people smuggler residing in Blaby. Hartshorn is a Liberal Democrat councillor.
Once in a while, Western countries identify cases of foreigners with criminal tendencies living locally unpertubed.
Rupert Matthews asks residents to remain Calm
The crime commissioner for Leicestershire and Rutland has called on the residents to remain calm. He assured them that law enforcement and other administrative organs are working with the Home Office regarding the Jamal issue.
Meanwhile, Paul Hartshorn registered his disappointment that someone linked to people trafficking could easily settle in the UK. Moreover, he said, Twana Jamal was not just residing, but working and trading in the UK.
