A massive fire broke out in two of Australia’s oil refineries. The fire broke out on 15th April at the refineries located in Geelong, a port city in Victoria, Australia.
Alarms began ringing a short while before midnight as emergency crews raced to the scene. Residents called the country’s emergency line, “000,” after hearing loud explosions in the neighborhood.
Hours after the fire broke out, reports from the scene indicated that liquid fuels and oils had caught fire. However, the Victoria fire rescue team managed to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the refinery area.
It was an arduous task for the fire crews to try to put out the fire. Fortunately, after 12 long hours, they managed to subdue it. It took 10 fire trucks and 50 firefighters to accomplish the task.
10% of Australia’s fuel comes from these refineries, which also supply half of the fuel used in the state of Victoria. The full extent of the damage is yet to be established.
The unfortunate incident at the facility run by Viva Energy occurred at a time of global oil problems stemming from the Iran War. The facility produces 120,000 barrels of oil daily.
