Germany has rescinded its earlier demand that men who have attained the age of 17 seek clearance before leaving the country for a period exceeding three months.
Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pictorius announced the suspension of that law this week. The requirement that the Armed Forces career centers decide whether or not to authorize extended stay outside Germany is in line with the government’s Military Service Modernization Act.
The government was motivated to enact this law that took effect in January this year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Impact of Good Journalism
Germans only recently went up in arms over this new law, yet it is more than three months old. It took effect in January 2026. Many people are wondering why.
The reason is that people have been so distracted by other issues that the impact of the Military Modernization Act has escaped them. They only realized its impact after a German newspaper highlighted it last week.
Pictorius, a Social Democrat whose party is a member of the ruling coalition, told the press that he is going to introduce an exemption clause into the Act. He emphasized that joining the army is still a personal choice in Germany.
Medical Examination Necessary
However, males who have reached 18 years of age are required to take a medical examination to determine their fitness, in case the country ever needs them for military service.
Currently, they are receiving questionnaires to fill out and indicate whether they would be interested in joining the service.
