Friday, 20th March, is a Public Holiday in Kenya. The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has declared and gazetted Friday, 20th March 2026, as a Public Holiday.
This gazettement is intended to enable Kenyan Muslims to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr alongside Muslims worldwide.
Importance of Idd-ul-Fitr
Idd-ul-Fitr marks the end of a month-long period of fasting, known as the holy month of Ramadhan.
Who is Allowed to Skip Fasting in Islam?
Children are not expected to fast during Ramadhan. This means that one can only fast after puberty, meaning between 10 and 14 years of age. Fasting adolescents must also be strong enough to withstand it.
Anyone whose health is wanting is also allowed to skip fasting. This includes mental health.
Breastfeeding and nursing mothers may also skip fasting. A woman may also miss to fast during their monthly period, and then spare some days later to make up for it.
People traveling are also allowed to skip fasting because travel periods are usually strenuous. However, they are expected to make up for the missed days later.
